Popescu awarded Leica Geosystems Internship

Atlanta, Georgia, USA - Leica Geosystems' GIS & Mapping Division has named Sorin Popescu, Ph.D. Candidate, Department of Forestry at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University as the recipient of the ASPRS 2002 LH Systems Internship, an eight-week intensive program open to graduate students of photogrammetry and remote sensing, designed to leverage the participants' existing research.

The announcement was made at the Awards Luncheon at the 2002 ASPRS- ACSM Annual Conference and XXII FIG Congress in Washington, DC, on 24 April.

The internship is presented by ASPRS: The Imaging and Geospatial Information Society, with funding provided by LH Systems, provider of the core Airborne Data Acquisition product line for Leica Geosystems' GIS & Mapping Division, headquartered in Atlanta. A wholly owned subsidiary of Leica Geosystems, LH Systems is a pioneer and one of the leaders in aerial photography, remote sensing, and photogrammetry.

"Leica Geosystems is pleased to offer the Internship to Sorin. We anticipate the experience will be mutually satisfying, giving Sorin satisfaction and work experience in a commercial environment, and developing his interests in creating new methods for estimating forest biophysical parameters from a combination of airborne LIDAR data and imagery, as well as benefiting Leica Geosystems in the future," said Scott Miller, Vice President, Airborne Data Acquisition Unit, Leica Geosystems, GIS & Mapping Division.

The program will provide Popescu an opportunity to carry out a small research project of his own choice, or work on an existing project as part of a team. Depending on the project, he will work in San Diego, Denver, Atlanta, Heerbrugg, or elsewhere with Leica Geosystems personnel. The internship consists of a stipend of $2,500 plus an allowance for travel and living expenses for the period of the internship. At the conclusion, Popescu will provide ASPRS with a final report of his research accomplishment.

For more information about the internship or products and services at Leica Geosystems' GIS & Mapping Division, contact: +1 404 248 9000, toll free: +1 877 463 7327, or visit www.gis.leica-geosystems.com.

A long-standing leader in the GIS market, Leica Geosystems is a dependable partner for 3D data acquisition, processing and visualization. With the recent integration of ERDAS and LH Systems, Leica Geosystems has expanded its product areas to offer four ranges of GIS and mapping solutions - airborne data acquisition, geographic imaging, GPS/GIS, and land information systems. Leica Geosystems' sensors, field data collectors, workstations and software allow users to create and update GIS databases rapidly, accurately and cost effectively.
