The National Imagery and Mapping Agency (NIMA) joined an elite group recently when, in a special ceremony held at the Ronald
Reagan Building in Washington, D.C., it was one of three organizations presented the President’s Quality Award.
NIMA received the Presidential Award for Management Excellence “in recognition of exemplary performance and results in the area
of Strategic Management of Human Capital.” The other recipients were the 55th Wing, Offutt Air Force Base, Neb., and the Federal
Aviation Administration Logistics Center, Oklahoma City.
“These awards recognize the best management practices in government,” said President George W. Bush in his opening remarks.
“This year's recipients have met high standards and, as a result, have earned the respect of the White House and our country.”
The U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) administers the awards program. Kay Coles James, OPM Director, noted that
these awards honor select federal government organizations and their teams for exemplary management practices which are advancing
the President’s call for a government that is truly citizen-centered, results-oriented and market-based.
Commenting on each winner, the President added after announcing NIMA, “For all of you who work there, I want to congratulate you
for winning this award.”
The award notes that NIMA is effectively linking its human capital strategies to its mission and strategic planning activities. Also,
through the Agency’s strategic work force planning process, agency leaders arrive at decisions regarding how to shape and tailor the
work force, and how to appropriately source the work to meet evolving strategic requirements.
