French city uses GIS for roads, transport, planning, parkland, property and economic development applications
Paris, 7 January 2002 The City of Bordeaux has successfully implemented a number of municipal applications using geographical information systems (GIS) technology and software from GeoConcept; GeoConcept, the European leader in geographical information systems, announced today.
The new applications are improving urban management in areas including roads, town planning, parks, property, economic development, open spaces and city transport. Bordeaux acquired 15 licences from GeoConcept in October 2000, after choosing the GeoConcept on grounds of its ease of use and ability to be personalized for different users.
"We are very pleased to be working with GeoConcept," said Xavier Svahn, project leader at Bordeaux City Council¹s Organization and Information Processing Department. "GeoConcept was clearly the most capable of meeting our needs in terms of simplicity, effectiveness and the range of options. GeoConcept¹s after sales service enabled us to implement the GIS and to train the people now in charge of development. The GeoConcept Enterprise Server solution is like a big tool box with a vast number of possibilities. We have reached our first objectives already and we now want to extend the range of our applications to all the municipal services that can benefit from a GIS approach."
"Working with a big city like Bordeaux is a rewarding experience for GeoConcept," said Eric Lanzi, CEO of GeoConcept. "They have extremely high expectations in the areas of flexibility and efficacy. We are delighted that this project has been successful and look forward to bringing the benefits of GeoConcept¹s new, faster G5 SIG engine to Bordeaux as well as to other customers needing to handle large volumes of data."
The use of GeoConcept¹s Enterprise Server Solution means that Bordeaux and GeoConcept have been able to integrate easily the GIS functions into Bordeaux¹s existing client-server architecture with a direct interface to the city¹s Oracle database.
Two other applications also deploy GeoConcept technology. GeoConcept¹s Internet Server allows the sharing of town maps across Bordeaux¹s intranet. GeoFoncier, an application developed by Géosphère using the GeoConcept engine, provides an effective solution to the management of building permits. Officials working on the case can display the plot with an interactive display of street names, landlords, as well as information from the land registry and from the tax authorities.
Other application details using GeoConcept¹s Enterprise Solution are:
management of empty property
identification of company premises within 100m of a given location
management of street signs: e.g. signposts can be stored in a database
management of green spaces (parks) also records details of the health of trees
