BOXBOROUGH, Mass.--Jan. 7, 2002--Marathon Technologies Corporation, the developer and supplier of Marathon Assured Availability(TM) solutions for Microsoft(R) Windows(R) operating systems, today announced that the Brookline Police Department in Massachusetts has selected Marathon Endurance(R) to protect critical public safety applications from hardware failure, software faults, and disasters.
To ensure the safety of the towns 57,000 residents, the police department requires continuous, 24/7 access to several mission- critical public safety applications, including an arrest booking program, records management system (RMS), detective case management, and GIS mapping. In addition, the department relies on its computer- assisted dispatch (CAD) and Enhanced 911 Interface-to-CAD applications to coordinate all dispatch for police, fire, and emergency medical services. The police department chose Marathon Endurance, running on standard Intel-based Dell servers, to guarantee that these applications are available and operational at all times.
"Any type of downtime would disrupt communications and deprive our officers of the critical information that aids them in their duties," stated Officer Scott Wilder, director of technology for the Brookline Police Department. "We found that only Marathon could supply us with every feature we needed, especially zero downtime."
"With Marathon Endurance, the citizens of Brookline can rest assured that their police, fire, and EMS teams have continuous access to the applications they need to respond to emergencies," said Linda Mentzer, vice president of marketing, Marathon Technologies Corporation. "We provide a cost-effective fault- and disaster-tolerant solution for organizations who require full protection of critical-applications and data."
Prior to using Marathon Endurance, the Brookline Police Department used a secondary server as backup when their main server was down. They had to manually start up and switch over to the backup server. "I estimated that depending on the time-of-day and day-of-week of the main server failure, we would need between 5 and 10 hours to be fully operational on the back up server," said Wilder. During the downtime, they would revert to a less efficient manual dispatch system and lose access to the arrest booking program, records management system (RMS), and detective case management records.
