First Modem Commercially Available For GSM/GPRS Networks VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA, JANUARY 7, 2002 (CCN Newswire via COMTEX) -- WebTech Wireless Inc., a global wireless vehicle services provider, today announced the commercial availability of the WebTech Connector i1000, the first ruggedized wireless modem for the GSM/GPRS network. The WebTech Connector i1000 for GSM/GPRS provides high-speed wireless connectivity for laptops, PDAs, peripheral devices (printers, barcode readers etc) and dispatch systems.
"The WebTech Connector i1000 provides mobile professionals and fleets with a fast, always-on connection to new GPRS networks," stated Cameron Fraser, Chief Technical Officer of WebTech Wireless. "The i1000 is really the brainchild of wireless carriers and consultants that came to us requiring stable GPRS connectivity for their customers in the field. WebTech is the only company globally with a commercially tested and deployed stand-alone modem for GPRS networks."
"Despite the widespread implementation of GPRS communications infrastructure the world over, it has taken longer than initially expected to get the end-user devices onto the market. At this early stage of always-on wireless data connectivity, mobile phones will only have limited functionality," commented Jamie Moss, Senior Telecommunications Analyst with Strategis Group UK. "It is therefore crucial to the wireless data market that products such as WebTech's i1000 are available to allow more powerful devices (such as PDAs, laptops, telematic devices and fleet management systems) to utilise the new high data throughput rates."
The WebTech Connector i1000 provides connectivity presently between 30 and 56 kbps and is anticipated to reach similar speeds of 115 kbps. The powerful network speed of GPRS provides subscribers with reliable wireless access to applications such as email, Internet browsing, back-office applications, Intranets/Extranets and other applications. This unprecedented speed provides the mobile workforce with the ability to access data-rich files or connect existing vehicle technologies to the Internet for real-time reporting.
"The availability of the Connector i1000 will help to kick-start the use of wireless data in earnest within real world scenarios. For the first time, real-time wireline-comparable Internet connectivity can be offered to mobile workers, for use with a wide range of devices. A GPRS wireless modem such as the i1000 will also make the cost of accessing remotely hosted content while on the move more economical than ever before - providing constant connectivity for real-time information updates without the costs incurred by maintaining a continuous circuit switched connection," commented Jamie Moss, Senior Telecommunications Analyst with Strategis Group UK.
The WebTech Connector i1000 is available immediately and can be upgraded with additional GPS or Telematics capabilities.
