Esrey Outlines Future of Wireless in CES Keynote Address

LAS VEGAS, Jan 11, 2002 -- In today's morning keynote at the 2002 International CES -- Your Source for Workstyle and Lifestyle Technology(SM) -- William T. Esrey, chairman and CEO of Sprint outlined the company's plans to be the first wireless carrier to deliver third generation (3G) wireless services nationwide.

Gary Shapiro, president and CEO of the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA), introduced Esrey by describing Sprint as one of the "dominant players in the wireless world" and said that Sprint is leading the way into a new world of wireless personal experience.

Esrey announced a new wireless phone partnership with Hitachi Ltd., a new e-mail solution for enterprise customers, new 3G phones from Sanyo and a wireless gaming pact with videogame publisher THQ.

"Most people aren't interested in simply replacing lower tech with high tech," Esrey told the attendees. "But they are vitally interested in useful innovations

-- in new, easy-to-use technology that creates real value. That's been one of our guiding principles in developing Sprint's 3G network."

Esrey then launched into a series of demonstrations illustrating the power and flexibility the next generation of wireless services will bring to consumers, including wireless imaging features, advanced messaging capabilities, location-based services and increased wireless gaming options.

Esrey also touted the company's first high-profile sneak peek of its 3G products and services in action to the general public and demonstrated a world where expanded network capabilities will allow carriers to deliver new services that will further integrate wireless communications into daily lives.

"The promise of 3G is no longer just a promise," Esrey said. "The fact is, while many wireless operators in this country have been investing millions -- even billions of dollars in frequency licenses and CDMA technology, Sprint made those investments five and more years ago. As a result, we've been able to focus our 3G investments in products that we can bring to market before any of our competitors. I'm pleased to tell you that our customers will gain the advantage to that head-start when we roll out the first of our third generation beginning this summer," he said.

American Wireless, Audiovox, Brightpoint, Cellstar, Kyocera, Nokia, Samsung, Sprint and Verizon Wireless are just a few of the more than 250 wireless exhibitors scheduled to display their latest technologies at CES. In addition, CES showcases a wireless SuperSession, the WiFi Pavilion.

At CES, attendees can see different digital media in action on the show floor -- from the MP3 and Internet Audio Zone to the Memory Stick Pavilion and SD Card Pavilion. The 2002 CES runs today through Friday, January 11 in Las Vegas, Nev. Audio and tapes of keynotes and sessions can be ordered through www.CESweb.org .
