Antarcti.ca CEO Tim Bray Joins Technology's Elite - Upside Magazine Spotlights Software Veteran's Leadership and Innovation

  • antarcti.ca
Vancouver, BC, January 22, 2002 - The editors of Upside Magazine have selected Tim Bray, CEO of Antarcti.ca Systems Inc,. as one of their "Elite 100," a select group of business leaders deemed the most powerful and influential in North America. Mr. Bray was selected with 12 other CEOs in the Technology category for his hands-on approach of leading his company and creating technology that impacts the way people access information. Others elected to the list include: Michael Dell of Dell Computer, Larry Ellison of Oracle, Bill Gates of Microsoft, Louis Gerstner Jr. of IBM, Steve Jobs of Apple Computer and Scott McNealy of Sun Microsystems. Mr. Bray's inclusion in the prestigious list brings a newcomer to the technology elite while demonstrating the power of his innovations in changing the way businesses operate and revealing new directions for information access through visual mapping.

As a 20-year veteran of the software industry, Mr. Bray is widely recognized as an expert in the problems of searching and retrieving information from large textual databases. He has an extensive list of innovations and successes that propelled his nomination by Upside.

    * In 1987 he managed the New Oxford English Dictionary Project at the University of Waterloo, charged with developing an indexing technology that could put the contents of the Oxford English Dictionary online, and make it searchable.

    * In 1989, he co-founded the Open Text Corporation (NASDAQ:OTEX) where he developed high-performance text retrieval software and in 1994 introduced what would become one of the first commercial Web search engines.

    * In 1998, he co-invented Extensible Markup Language (XML), which has become the universal format for structured documents.

    * In 1999, he founded Antarcti.ca Systems, a pioneer developer of data visualization technology. The company's products are based on visual mapping techniques that enable users to navigate complex databases of information easily across multiple databases and formats.

    * In 2001, he was nominated by Tim Berners-Lee, inventor of the World Wide Web and Director of the Web Consortium, to the Consortium's Technical Advisory Group, which serves an architectural oversight function for the whole Web.

"Mr. Bray has been an innovative force in the technology world for many years and we are proud to include him on our 2001 list of the most influential people in technology," stated Kendra Wall, Upside Magazine's Features Editor.

The "Elite 100," a major feature published annually by Upside, names CEOs from several business sectors, including venture capital, semiconductors, Internet, technology, biotechnology, and telecommunications. Upside is a monthly business and finance magazine providing detailed analysis of the business of technology - the individuals, market trends and venture investments driving advanced technology.
