www.mapindia.org
CSDMS are happy to inform you that MapIndia 2002 is all set to have an overwhelming
participation of about 1000 delegates from different application and technology areas of the GIS
community. Map India 2002 is the 5th annual international conference and exhibition in the field
of geographic information technologies like GIS, GPS, Aerial Photography and Remote Sensing.
Although it primarily serves the Indian geographic community, however over a period of time it
has attracted considerable international participation and provides a platform for collaboration
between India and the rest of the world. It has been realised that the availability of maps is
critical to almost all forms of human activity and in the development of a nation. The potential
benefits of map making have been realised however very few attempts have been made at
quantifying the benefits. Map India 2002 will endeavour to initiate deliberations on economic
dimensions of map making in terms of investment and profit yielded out of it.
Objectives
Increase awareness about use of Geographic Information System in the public, private & the
NGO sector in India.
Facilitate interaction amongst experts and senior decision makers in the country about GIS
for data collection, collation and distribution.
Showcase Indian success stories using these technologies.
Attract direct foreign investment in Indian Geo-informatic Industry.
Themes
Map India 2002 Technical programme has been divided into four parallel sessions, which
include over thirty application and technology areas of GIS. 'Maponomics' and 'Power on
Demand by 2012' are the central themes for year 2002. Also there will be a workshop on 'NSDI,
Status and Future Development'. Agriculture, Urban Planning, Global Recession and Indian GIS
Industry, Highways and Transportation and, Mobile Mapping and Virtual GIS are some of the
other thrust areas for this years conference. Technology shows and presentation by leading GIS
companies will also be held during the three-day conference. Preceding to the conference, a three
days training programme on GIS and GPS is also being organised.
Maponomics
Availability of maps is critical to planning vis-á-vis infrastructure development, rural
development, disaster management, natural resource conservation, forest management, health
and family welfare etc. As such it follows that maps are a powerful tool in the development of
a nation. The focus of this session will be to examine the cost-benefit relationship of creating
and utilizing maps.
In this context there is a need to address the following issues within the Indian framework;
Investment in map making
Pricing of map products
Cost recovery mechanisms
Intellectual property rights
Quantification of benefits
Quality and standards
Power on Demand by 2012
"Power on Demand by 2012" is a platform to address the problems and find best solutions in
the Power Sector. Participants will have the opportunity to exchange views, take inputs from
technology experts, academicians and researchers, give their ideas to decision makers, share
success stories and learn more about the application of GIS, GPS and Remote Sensing in the
Power Sector. The conference is in tune with the Union Ministry of Power's blueprint,
envisaging power for all by 2012 in India.
Workshop on 'NGDI: Towards a Roadmap for India'
In view of recent initiatives with regard to development and design of National Spatial Data
Infrastructure (NSDI) for India, all major spatial data producing agencies have agreed that such
a body would allow better co-ordination and facilitate data production and distribution to
various users for overall development of the country. CSDMS had organised a workshop
"NGDI: Towards a Roadmap for India" where a Strategy Document was adopted in the
presence of Hon'ble Minister of State for Science and Technology, Government of India. The
progress towards the NSDI for India has been encouraging. Various members of Task Force
and Committees under the umbrella of Task Force have been doing excellent work to achieve
the goals. Follow-up studies on the recommendation of the Workshop are underway
A Galaxy of renowned speakers from academia, industry, government and non-government
organisation are scheduled to address the conference on various themes. There will be more than
