Saar Ferngas AG to Base New GIS Implementation on ESRI Software

Redlands, California-ESRI is pleased to announce that Saar Ferngas AG (SFG), headquartered in Saarbrücken, Germany, has selected ArcGIS for its new geographic information system (GIS) platform. SFG is one of Germany's largest gas transportation companies and will be migrating from its existing Sysdeco system to an enterprisewide GIS solution based on ArcInfo 8.1 and ArcSDE using an Oracle relational database. The sale was conducted by ESRI Geoinformatik GmbH, ESRI's software distributor in Germany.

SFG has been using GIS technology to manage its distribution network since 1983. It is the first natural gas company in Germany to recognize the benefits of GIS for pipeline management and the first to digitize its entire high-pressure gas transportation network. SFG is among the top 10 natural gas providers in Germany. With its 1,700-km high- pressure gas pipeline network, it serves 45 distribution companies that in turn provide natural gas to more that 567,000 households.

Market changes, such as deregulation, liberalization, and the need to increase efficiency and optimize internal work flows, are the primary reasons SFG decided to look for another GIS solution.

"We chose ESRI's ArcGIS because the software is based on industry standards and has an open system approach, which will help Saar Ferngas protect its investment in GIS. In addition, we believe that ArcGIS will be able to fulfill future GIS requirements for the company," comments Albert Lamprecht, GIS manager for Saar Ferngas. For additional information, please contact Stefan Jung by e-mail at s.jung@ESRI-Germany.de.
