Use of GIS Software in the DC Area Sniper Investigation
www.digitalcorp.com
Digital Engineering Corporation/Citygate GIS Inc. introduces its ROADBlock Software, which was developed as a response to the Sniper spree in the Washington, DC area. ROADBlock aids law enforcement officials with the task of closing off roads after a crime has been committed. The user enters an address or a road intersection and a perimeter distance around an event. The software then automatically computes the most likely exit routes and the minimum number of road blocks needed to close the area.
ROADBlock was offered at no cost to all jurisdictions involved in the Sniper Investigation. The software was implemented by the Virginia State Police, the Maryland State Police, and the District of Columbia Metropolitan Police.

The software and its capabilities were recently demonstrated to President George W. Bush and Homeland Security Adviser Tom Ridge during a visit to the Washington DC's Metropolitan Police Department Synchronized Operations Center.
