Chatham -Kent Celebrates GIS Day

The Municipality of Chatham-Kent held its first annual GIS day on Wednesday November 20, 2002. The venue for the exciting event was the Municipal Council Chambers located at the Chatham-Kent Civic Centre in Chatham, Ontario.

The Mayor and Municipal Council had proclaimed November 20, 2002 GIS day and the week of November 17th through 23rd Geography week. The Mayor and a number of Councillor’s attended the presentations throughout the day.

The event was conducted over the course of the day with students and teachers attending during regular school hours and the general public invited during the evening.

The GIS day was well attended by over 320 school students and teachers. The presentations consisted of both multimedia presentations and GIS demonstrations. The highlight of the presentation was an exciting game of “Who wants to be a Geogaphaire, loosely based on the game show Who wants to be a Millionaire. Students would volunteer to participate in the game and choose the name of a country participating in GIS Day or a local community from a hat. The student would then use the Chatham-Kent GIS Web Tool to locate the place. The students could “ask a friend” if they found they needed further assistance. This game was a success and reinforced the usefulness of the range of GIS tools developed by Chatham-Kent.

Members of the general public were invited to an evening presentation for GIS Day. Coffee and light refreshments were served and the attendees enjoyed both the multimedia presentations and GIS demonstrations.

Students, teachers and the public were encouraged to use Chatham-Kent’s Web GIS to assist in planning their days and completing projects. They were also encouraged to spread the word to their peers on geography, GIS and the GIS tools available to them over the internet.

The Chatham-Kent GIS tools can be accessed through the Community Web Portal at: www.chatham-kent.ca
