COPENHAGEN, Denmark, Sep 23, 2002 - Kampsax, which was taken over by COWI on June 27 this year, has signed the
company's biggest mapping contract yet with Ordnance Survey, Britain's national mapping agency. Over the next five years, Kampsax will supply an updated
digital map covering a large part of Great Britain. Kampsax expects the order will total more than Euro 35 million worth of mapping and related assignments.
The contract with Ordnance Survey, which was founded in 1791, means that Kampsax has now entered into a strategic partnership with one of the world's
most recognized mapping organizations. The partnership will include strengthening Ordnance Survey's interaction with suppliers with the use of Kampsax'
process control tool, Kampsax Process Management (KPM).
Breakthrough for Kampsax' Indian investments
The order from Ordnance Survey includes the aerial photography of Great Britain. Kampsax has extensive experience with aerial photography and digital
mapping, and own their own aircraft, cameras and production facilities. The production of digital maps based on aerial photographs will fall to Kampsax' Indian
subsidiary in New Delhi and the order therefore represents a breakthrough for Kampsax' Indian investments. With the order commencing autumn this year,
Kampsax has already strengthened the organization and increased the subsidiary's capacity substantially.
International leap forward
Ordnance Survey will constantly be evaluating Kampsax' execution of the order, and this places stringent demands on supply and quality control. One of the
special aspects of Kampsax' solution to Ordnance Survey is that all work processes will be documented using Kampsax' unique KPM system. This factor was
important in helping Kampsax win the contract with Ordnance Survey.
KPM allows Ordnance Survey to monitor even the smallest delivery. Every detail is documented right from the first flights to verification, digitalization and map
production. This effectively gives Ordnance Survey full control over the many years of work ahead.
"We have signed the most important mapping contract in Kampsax' 85 year history. The partnership with Ordnance Survey will enable us to take a quantum
leap forward over an increasingly competitive international industry. At the same time, the contract will enable us to focus on entirely new markets so that in the
coming years, we'll be even better equipped as map suppliers," says Helge Hojaer Larsen, Divisional Director for Kampsax Geographical Information.
"This is a highly significant project -- and I have no doubt that they can live up to our exacting standards with regard to quality and delivery control," says Neil
Ackroyd, Director Data Collection and Management at Ordnance Survey.
Global acceptance of open standards Kampsax will continually, and with short production deadlines, supply the digital data that underpins Great Britain's
mapping, including the topographic layer of Ordnance Survey's Mastermap product
-- a mosaic of maps that displays Great Britain as an intelligent reference tool
featuring nine different themes that can be toggled on and off. The themes include roads, tracks, paths, water, buildings, memorials and more than 400 million
man-made mapping elements. The map will be based on the open GML standard (Geographic Markup Language), and every mapping element will be linked to
a unique TOID (Topographic Identifier). The GML standard is now being accepted in geographical connections all over the world. This makes it easier for
ISPs, software developers and database suppliers to co-operate with Ordnance Survey's Mastermap as the hub.
