Outstanding response to Laser-Scan academic programme
Printer Friendly versionPrinter Friendly

Cambridge, UK, 30th July 2003. Laser-Scan's Radius Academic Programme has achieved an impressive roll call since its inception less than a year ago.

The latest addition to Laser-Scan's academic family is the Ohio State University where students will be conducting research on simplicial and other cell complexes. Various topological queries like adjacency and connectivity will be reviewed as combinatorial rather than geometric operations. In this instance the topology is stored independently of geometric data so that topology is preserved through various mathematical transformations meaning that the interior, boundary and exterior of each and every object can be viewed as being made up of a set of these cells. MapInfo Professional is used to view and edit the data.

As part of this research a GIS implementation based on simplicial and other cell complexes is being carried out using Oracle Object-Relational database technology.

Among the other universities taking part are University College London, Technical University of Delft, University of Arkansas and University of Muenster, all of which are accredited Oracle Spatial Centers of Excellence.

Academic Programme Manager Dan Warner says:

" The Academic Programme is a relatively recent initiative at Laser-Scan although we have been involved with educational organisations for over 30 years; Laser-Scan itself was a spin-out from Cambridge University. Now we have formalised our commitment to this important area of the industry we are reaping the benefit of valuable insight from research projects, as well as providing an opportunity to share our extensive knowledge of complex geospatial information technologies."

The Radius Academic Programme is designed to allow students and researchers to work in an open standards environment and use various interoperable tools, such as the Oracle9i database, SQL, PL/SQL, XML and Java.

The Programme establishes a network of universities working with Laser-Scan worldwide and is intended to allow for an open exchange of ideas and information. This exchange is facilitated through open correspondence, presentations and reports.
