Experts Available To Discuss Technology To Make Driving Safer
Printer Friendly versionPrinter Friendly

TOPIC: Scientists at Carnegie Mellon University are working on a "gesture interface" system that uses hand gestures to perform tasks within a vehicle such as adjusting the radio, air conditioning and answering phone calls to keep drivers focused on the road, according to a report by ABCNEWS.com. A camera is placed around the gearshift and is attached to a laptop containing computer algorithms. The camera tracks hand gestures and translates them into the appropriate command determined by the researchers. Other researchers are working to minimize distractions that drivers face by using voice-recognition systems to connect the car's electronics to cell phones and personal handheld computers, the article says.

Professor John Lee, of the University of Iowa, is an expert on driving safety. His current research addresses two general aspects of driving safety. The first is the tendency of in-vehicle technology to distract drivers. This research has focused on the next generation of in-vehicle devices such as email, web access, and navigation systems. The second examines the ability of collision warning systems to alert drivers to dangerous situations. 319-384-0810 -0-
