DMTI Spatial’s Latest Spatial Solution Speaks To Local Government
Printer Friendly versionPrinter Friendly

Markham, ON December 3, 2003 – Canada’s leader in geospatial data publishing announces the launch of their latest program, Local Government Information Sharing (Local GIS). Local GIS is DMTI Spatial’s third groundbreaking initiative this year, following the debuts of SMARTUSA and GRACE.

The Local GIS program is based on a partnership between DMTI Spatial™ and municipal governments that supplies local government with access to CanMap Streetfiles®, CanMap RouteLogistics, CanMap Parks, CanMap Rail, Enhanced Points of Interest, the Enhanced Postal Code file for Canada, and the Forward Sortation Area Boundaries for Canada. In return, DMTI Spatial receives mapping information that will assist in the maintenance of its CanMap product line.

“Local GIS is designed to address the demands placed on local governments in their attempt to maintain a street network file and related geospatial databases,” said Susan Giannou, Manager of Data Partnerships. This program is a true win-win for local governments and for DMTI. “By partnering with DMTI Spatial, local governments can free up dollars and resources to provide services to their citizens, while at the same time enjoying the benefit of world-class, nationally consistent streetmaps and geospatial datasets to facilitate municipal operations. This program can help local governments attract new business to their communities and ensure that their community is properly represented from, for example, a tourism perspective.”

A number of local governments such as the City of Leduc, Alberta have already recognized the benefits of such an initiative. Bart Pouteau, Geomatics Services Coordinator from the City of Leduc said, “The major benefit of DMTI’s Local GIS program for us is that it allowed us to create a spatial business directory using the Enhanced Points of Interest (EPOI) file which forms the foundation of a business locator application on our website. DMTI’s data will substantially reduce the time and effort to develop this application and also allow us to include SIC code designations, which was beyond the cities’ current capabilities.”

DMTI’s data products are widely used by major corporations, large Internet sites and senior government ministries; Local GIS provides an opportunity for Local Governments to free up scarce resources that can be used for critical initiatives within their administration. With DMTI Spatial’s team of GIS experts, Local Government can benefit by using existing datasets without the headaches caused by maintaining them.
