NED Pre-Defined Areas on CD now available through Earth Explorer
The NED Pre-Defined areas on CD are searchable and orderable on Earth Explorer (EE). http://earthexplorer.usgs.gov They can be searched by placename, coordinates, defining an area on the map, or date of update. If a customer is a registered user, they have the capability of setting up a standing request in EE to be notified when updates are added to the database. Another website, National Elevation Dataset Pre-Defined Areas on CD can be accessed to view a map index and place an order. The cost is $32 per CD and $45 base charge and $5 handling per order. The format choices are GridFloat and ArcGrid. Each CD will have a different number and different file sizes depending on the data available. The majority of CONUS will be one raster of 2 by 6 latitude/longitude, AK will be rasters of 1 by 1 latitude/longitude, and the islands will be rasters of variable sizes.
New Map Interface Features
Two new features have been added to the SDDS-E map interface.
The first is the capability to "Define Area by Coordinates". This feature can be found at the bottom left side of the map interface. It will allow coordinates to entered, either as DD MM SS or Decimal Degrees. Once the coordinates are entered, the request will start processing.
The second is a "Download Layer" list on the right side of the map interface. This allows products available for download to be checked or unchecked. If the interest is for only one download layer, uncheck the others and this will help speed up the request. The option within "Request Summary Page" is still available to select or unselect layers. As more layers become available to download, they will be added to the list.
Additional Formats for Download
The Seamless Data Distribution System - Enhanced now offers .BIL - meter and Gridfloat generic formats as a download format option. BIL is a non-proprietary format made by running the GRIDIMAGE command in Arc. It is essentially an integer binary data file with accompanying ASCII descriptor files. GridFloat is a non-proprietary format made by running the GRIDFLOAT command in Arc. It is essentially a floating-point binary data file with accompanying ASCII descriptor files. These formats would apply to all seamless products available on the website.
Macintosh Capabilities
The Seamless Data Distribution System now works on Macintosh using OS-X, using Netscape 7.0. Testing is still being conducted for Internet Explorer v5.2.
1/3 arc second (10m NED)
USGS is offering 1/3 arc second (10m NED) as a seamless product. The initial release is only be available as free download. The data is only hosted on the Seamless Data Distribution System - Enhanced. At this time, approximately 40% of the United States have 10m DEM's. These DEM's were used to create the 1/3 arc second (10m NED). The formats available will be ArcGrid and TIFF (32bit floating point grid). The initial release is offering the Northwest United States. More areas for 1/3-arc second data will follow.
SRTM
USGS is now distributing elevation data from the Shuttle Remote Topography Mission (SRTM).
Initially 1-arc second (30 meter) SRTM data of the continental United States can now be obtained via electronic download. Up to an area 30 degrees square of raster data (1.6 gigabytes), in 100 megabyte sized files, are downloadable at no charge.
SRTM data is being processed at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) Pasadena, California into research-quality digital-elevation models one continent at a time. The data is 90 meter averaged from the original 30 meter data. As each continent is completed, the data is being sent to NIMA for final finishing, i.e. correction of voids and artifacts and quality checking.
In the interim, USGS will host and distribute the "unfinished" data as received via the USGS EDC Seamless Data Distribution System - Enhanced initially starting with the 30 meter resolution for the continental United States.
Once NIMA has completed the finishing of the continental datasets, USGS EROS Data Center will replace the interim datasets with the final version and distribute the data for broad public access.
NASA began processing mission data in April 2002 and expects to have all mission data processed and delivered to NIMA by the end of this year.
All international 90-meter (295-foot) resolution finished data is anticipated to be available to the public no later than July 2004.
As new 3-arc second (90 meter) international continental datasets are processed and received, USGS will distribute this data via the Seamless Data Distribution System - Enhanced.
See the USGS SRTM website for additional information.
