The GeoInformation Group Helps Map Noisy Traffic for Brent

Cambridge, July 2003 - The GeoInformation® Group, publishers of Cities Revealed™ aerial photography and other geospatial products, has announced the supply of its building heights database, City Heights™, to London Borough of Brent to help create a noise information system.

City Heights, an off-the-shelf database provided Brent’s Environmental Health Department with height information for over 100,000 buildings throughout the borough, enabling them to map noise exposure categories. All noise related data is calculated to produce a colour-coded map at four metre height intervals relating to the various levels of pollution experienced throughout the region.

City Heights specifically helps the council to show the noise in a complex urban 3-dimensional environment. The interaction of traffic noise through reflection and screening with buildings and other acoustically relevant objects including roads and hills is essential to calculating the noise levels. The height data, which has been accurately derived from recently acquired Cities Revealed stereo aerial photography provides the council with a highly reliable data source with a vertical and horizontal accuracy of just +/-0.5m.

“The format in which the data was delivered has proven both a valuable and convenient asset within the council for a large number of projects including noise pollution mapping,” comments Alisdair MacLean, GIS Manager for the Council. He adds ”As the data comes ready-mapped to Ordnance Survey buildings, they require no further laborious processing unlike its counterpart LIDAR”.

The noise contour maps reliably confirm that the North Circular is the busiest road network within the UK, causing a major source of disturbance to the surrounding population. Under the Rural White Paper, the forthcoming EC Directive and the Greater London Authority Act require ambient noise levels to be established as a baseline to produce action plans for reducing noise sources in areas of high noise pollution. It is now the responsibility of DEFRA and the London Mayor for formulating action plans based on the various noise levels identified by each council.

Further use of the building height data within the London Borough of Brent include use within the Planning Department for generating accurate and realistic 3D views of every building within an area. The database is also being used to establish building volumes for energy consumption and conservation surveys.

City Heights is supplied in a number of standard format options including DXF, ESRI Shape and MapInfo Tab ensuring easy and seamless integration with many types of GIS and CAD software.
