DMTI Spatial’s Highly Successful Academic SMART™ Program Poised to Take US Academia by Storm

Markham, ON - July 08, 2003 - DMTI Spatial™, Canada’s leading geospatial data experts, are pleased to announce the launch of their highly successful SMART program (Spatial Mapping Academic Research Tools) in the United States. The SMART USA Edition is designed to foster the inclusion of GIS in education; primarily those programs that have a Canadian Studies focus. SMART USA provides access to a suite of Canadian GIS map data products, complete with national routing, street naming and addressing at a significantly discounted price.

The program supports social science, research, international studies, business, health and environmental geographic educational programs.

“The success of our SMART Program in Canada, coupled with an overwhelming demand for a similar program in the United States, prompted DMTI Spatial to respond with SMART USA. Now American professors and students with Canadian studies programs can base their research and teachings on real Canadian data,” said John Fisher, President and CEO of DMTI Spatial. “DMTI Spatial is proud to be the first private sector GIS mapping company to launch such a program and hopes that our involvement will pave the way for others to follow suit.”

“The expansion of DMTI Spatial’s SMART program to the United States will enable American students to learn more about Canada and to study issues that encompass both countries, such as ecology, water resources, climate, macro-economics and trade, - the list is almost endless. In this age of globalization, it's important to look beyond national borders, and DMTI's program makes it easier for Americans to see Canada and the United States as closely inter-connected neighbours,” said Michael Phoenix, Education Industry Manager for ESRI. “Having affordable access to high-quality data for Canada makes it much easier for Americans to study Canadian geography and culture.”

As part of the SMART USA program each subscribing institution receives an enterprise wide license to access a suite of over 11 DMTI Spatial products, including CanMap® Streetfiles, CanMap RouteLogistics, the Enhanced Postal Code file for Canada, the GeoPinpoint Suite, CanMap Rail and the 30 Metre Digital Elevation Model for Canada. Don DeGenova, Vice-President, Business Development & Strategic Alliances today officially launched this new initiative during an address at the ESRI Education User Conference.

The SMART USA Program is an expansion of DMTI’s successful Canadian SMART Program launched in October 2001. Over 40 universities and colleges now subscribe to SMART. In May 2002, DMTI Spatial was the recipient of the ACMLA Achievement Award “in recognition of their substantial and innovative contribution to the teaching and study of GIS in post-secondary institutions through the provision of affordable access to high-quality national geospatial data” given by unanimous consent of the Executive Board of the ACMLA.
