Telespazio to strengthen its global market position in Earth Observation services

Munich, Germany, 13.June.2003 -
Telespazio SpA, a Finmeccanica Company, one of the European key players in space telecommunication and Earth Observation services – data acquisition and processing as well as applications for geographic information –, has become the major share holder of GAF AG, a move that brings together two entities devoted to develop a promising but demanding market. While GAF is a synonym for leading competence in Earth observation and integrated information technology and services, Telespazio is a European operator, an international reference in design, planning and management of space systems and in the development of satellite technology based services and solutions. Eurimage, a joint endeavour of Telespazio and Astrium, may, together with Euromap, a wholly owned subsidiary of GAF, add further value to the field of data distribution. The necessary economic size to make an impact in a coalescing European and global market is even more represented by the parent group Finmeccanica.
Enrico Saggese, CEO of Telespazio SpA, says: “The GAF acquisition has a strategic relevance for Telespazio, which is now able to offer a really complete range of Earth observation solutions, from satellite data acquisition and processing, to software and high value added services distribution. Actually, GAF is one of the leading value adding companies in Europe which has outperformed most other competitors in the past years and its success is highlighted by a constant growth in turnover, profits and staff.”
Rupert Haydn, CEO of GAF AG, states: “This exciting transaction is fully supported by the GAF team and marks a continuation of our success story. It provides an excellent chance to better exploit our potentials and create massive synergy with the parent company in challenging times ahead. Surely we can and will create a boost in business activities from the integration of different success experience.”
About Telespazio SpA: www.telespazio.it
The birth of Telespazio SpA, over forty years ago, coincides with the birth of the space era and space industry. From that moment on, Telespazio has expressed the Italian technological challenge and the connatural tension for the progress in the communications field, in the diffusion of the knowledge and in the quality of life here on Earth. With its own network of Space Centres, Fucino, Lario, Scanzano and Matera, the most important structure focused on remote sensing, Telespazio is the only private operator offering a complete range of satellite solutions: satellite in orbit control, ground segment design, fixed and mobile telecommunications, television services, broadband multimedia, Earth observation data and applications, navigation and R&D.
Telespazio is involved in the most important international space projects: GALILEO, the new European navigation and positioning system, and in Cosmo-SkyMed, the first earth observation satellite system for real time acquisition of images with a spatial resolution of 60cm for civil and commercial purposes.
