Following the successful launch of The GeoInformation™ Group’s Historical Air Photo product recently held at London’s Imperial War Museum, BBCi has taken on historic imagery in support of its media activities to commemorate D-Day.
The launch, which saw the archive of The GeoInformation Group’s historic air photos unveiled for the first time, played host to over 60 attendees from key industry sectors including the press, government organizations and professional bodies.
The value of such remarkable imagery capturing the events and sites of the WWII era has already been recognised by the media. BBC Online published an informative feature on their website providing a moving account of six personal experiences of veterans who fought in the battle at Omaha Beach on D-Day, 6 June 1944. The actions of this day have been caught on the supporting aerial photograph which clearly illustrates the eastern section of the beach cluttered with tanks and beached ships. See this feature at www.historicairphotos.com
Further media coverage of the newly published digital image archive has included a Special Report by BBC Look East and two interviews with BBC Radio Cambridgeshire. The reports specifically focused on the background of The GeoInformation Group, the sourcing of the historic imagery archive and the extensive role the photography plays within industry.
“The launch provided attendees with first-hand access to many scenes of WWII that have never been seen before” remarks Alun Jones, Managing Director of The GeoInformation Group. “The events and sites revealed in such detail have helped to demonstrate how these digital photographs can offer invaluable information about our past for use within both the private and public sector”.
Further features on the historic aerial photography are planned for future trade publications including New Civil Engineer, Geomatics World, Geographical and GI News.
