Intergraph's Geospatial Resource Management Solution Unifies City of Hamilton and Six Municipalities' Public Works Asset Management System

City staff saves time and improves workflows by integrating public works data and spatial information

NEW ORLEANS, May 19, 2003 - GeoSpatial World 2003 - Intergraph Mapping and Geospatial Solutions today announced that the City of Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, Public Works Department, has chosen Intergraph's Geospatial Resource Management solutions to improve delivery of public services to residents in conjunction with the recent merger of seven municipalities - now called the City of Hamilton. Prior to the merger, the city's existing spatial and asset management systems operated independently, resulting in duplication of data and effort, and overall operating inefficiencies. With the merger, the public works, transportation, environment, and operations departments will now provide service to an expanded population of more than half a million.

New demands, such as increased maintenance and updates to public systems, including water and sewer, and customer requests resulting from the increased number of end-users, prompted city officials to explore various ways to streamline their daily workflows.

Intergraph's GeoMedia(r)-Hansen Interface, will give Hamilton an easy solution to tightly integrate their asset data. Using their existing GeoMedia database and Hansen Infrastructure Management System, Hamilton city employees will be able to store graphic features and associated attributes as unified records within a centralized industry-standard object model database. Intergraph's GeoMedia-Hansen Interface will provide the department with a bi-directional interface to move information seamlessly between the two databases, eliminating redundant data entry and synchronization problems.

With the GeoMedia-Hansen Interface, data now will be entered once in one system and then automatically synchronized with the other system. This will allow users to switch easily between the map-based display in GeoMedia and the detailed asset records in Hansen to view up-to-date information. The technology will also give city employees the capability to access work orders, customer service requests, and asset groups, thus allowing quicker response to customer requests and issues.

According to Jim MacAulay, Supervisor of Engineering Services, Public Works Department, City of Hamilton, the new technology is helping them improve decision-making processes. "By integrating spatial information with tabular assets within the interface, our users can select or locate assets on a map and visualize asset information and work-order history spatially, allowing them to assess and analyze scenarios with a more complete set of information. We are pleased with the many work efficiencies we realize from the robust set of tools, such as the capability to select several assets spatially and create single or multiple work orders against multiple assets."

The City of Hamilton's work will be featured at GeoSpatial World 2003, May 19 - 21, in New Orleans, La. John Murray, of Hamilton, will give a presentation about asset management on Monday, May 19, at 3:00 p.m. An Intergraph representative will present information on the city's internal and external Web development on Tuesday, May 20, at 11:00 a.m. For more information about these presentations and GeoSpatial World, visit www.geospatialworld.com.

City of Hamilton, Ontario, Canada

The City of Hamilton is situated on the southwestern shore of Lake Ontario, an area that became a center of Canadian industry in the middle nineteenth century when the Great Western Railway was founded there. Known as the Birmingham of Canada for its industrial focus, Hamilton progressed from small industrial workshops to large, nationally important factories at the beginning of the twentieth century to the most technologically advanced industry at the beginning of the twenty-first century. Today, the City of Hamilton boasts a population of more than half a million people and is located along the second largest and busiest corridor between Canada and the United States.
