Halifax, NS - The Annapolis District Planning Commission (ADPC), was presented with an Award of Excellence (AOE) at ESRI Canada's annual User Conference in Halifax. Alex Miller, President of ESRI Canada, presented the award in recognition of the ADPC’s Centre for Land Information and Computer-based Knowledge (CLICK) project.
“The Award of Excellence is going to a very deserving organization that has implemented an easy-to-use web-based geomatics tool connecting the ADPC with the municipalities of Middleton, Bridgetown, and Annapolis Royal,” said Mr. Miller. “The ADPC developed a community-based, sustainable GIS model that can also be used by other small and rural communities using ESRI software -- I commend their efforts.”
CLICK focuses specifically on municipal planning, public works, and development/building permit tracking applications. The municipalities all have access to information such as pipes, sewer lines, property boundaries, heritage structures, historic districts, and civic numbers. The municipalities use GIS to access information on their desktops, over the Internet with a web-based GIS, and in the field using a handheld PC. Field staff can view information and input new information to the database.
“CLICK gives our residents and those who work with us on infrastructure and small or large scale projects, quick and easy access to information that used to only be available in hard copy format,” said Roger Sturtevant, Director of Planning, ADPC.
Bill Hamilton Chair of the ADPC highlighted that, “our web-based GIS and information service centre will significantly reduce the time and effort required to produce reports, proposals, and visuals for community consultation. We appreciate the strong ESRI presence on our team.”
The ADPC partnered with the Nova Scotia Community College's (NSCC) Centre of Geographic Sciences (COGS) in the Annapolis Valley. The ADPC built and maintain a public Internet site, and the information is transmitted via a server at NSCC/COGS in Lawrencetown. NSCC/COGS access the ADPC databases for real application use in the classroom. Students provide application design and enhancement in a municipal environment, and the ADPC benefits from the College's work. NSCC/COGS students are able to participate in applications training for the program.
Industry Canada's Smart Communities Initiative funded the CLICK project in order to support the ADPC in using information and communication technology to benefit the community.
ESRI Canada presents Awards of Excellence annually to organizations and individuals across the country for their outstanding achievement in the application of GIS technology.
