High School Dropout Rate Fell in '90s

The high school dropout rate for 16- to 19-year-olds fell from 11.2
percent in 1990 to 9.8 percent in 2000, according to a Census 2000 brief
on school enrollment released today by the U.S. Census Bureau.

provides a profile of the student population of the United States in 2000.
The report and supplementary tables on the Internet show numbers of
people enrolled in school, their level of schooling and whether the school
was public or private. They also have data on school enrollment by age,
sex, race and Hispanic origin, high school dropout rates by race and
Hispanic origin and private elementary and high school enrollments.
The data are based on responses from a sample of households that
received the Census 2000 long form. Nationally, about 1-in-6 households
were included in the sample. Estimates in the report are subject to
sampling and nonsampling error.
