MapText’s Label-EZ Text Placement Software is Selected by the Ohio Department of Transportation

Plainsboro, NJ – August 16, 2004. MapText, Inc. announced today that the Ohio Department of Transportation has selected the Company’s market-leading software system, Label-EZ™, for its map production operations. MapText’s easy-to-configure software will be used to place names on maps according to the highest cartographic standards, quickly and cost-effectively. MapText’s Label-EZ is fully compatible with all major GIS systems used by DOT’s.

MapText’s worldwide roster of clients now includes the Departments of Transportation of nine states – those of Georgia, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Texas.

The GIS and mapping group within Ohio DOT is responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining a comprehensive and integrated Geographic Information System (GIS), and incorporating the department's Linear Referencing System (LRS). The mapping group used to generate the maps using a system based around MGE / Microstation. The department is currently in the process of migrating all mapping activity to a GeoMedia-based solution and will be using Label-EZ in that workflow.

“One of our biggest concerns in moving to a GeoMedia-based solution had been replacing the Microstation-based label layers associated with a large number of features. Extensive resources would have been required to generate new labels for a pleasing cartographic product in GeoMedia. The capabilities of Label-EZ for generating DOT-specific high-quality maps with minimal effort helped ease our concerns and we are looking forward to using this product for our mapping activities”, said Dave Blackstone, Manager of GIS/Mapping at Ohio DOT.

“At MapText we are proud to have Ohio DOT join the growing list of State DOTs among our customers and to assist them to generate their maps cost-effectively with the highest cartographic quality”, commented Dr. Herbert Freeman, President of MapText, Inc.
