MapInfo MapXtreme Java Edition v4.7 supports Open GIS Consortium (OGC) Web Mapping Service and World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) standards, thereby enabling local authority users to share data more effectively and achieve e-government goals
30 January, 2004 - MapInfo, the leading provider of location intelligence for the enterprise, has reinforced its commitment to interoperability and standards with the release of MapInfo MapXtreme Java Edition v4.7, the company's 100% Java mapping server solution that provides application developers with a highly visual, intuitive component for integrating mapping functionality into any web-based application.
This latest version fully supports the Open GIS Consortium (OGC) Web Mapping Service (WMS) specification version 1.1.1. This provides an open way for users to create a map (image) by providing set parameters. Users can access maps from MapXtreme Java WMS by using any OGC compliant WMS client, including MapInfo Professional v7.5, MapXtreme Java WMS Client, included with the product, or any other vendor solution supporting WMS. Future releases of MapXtreme will provide support for OGC Web Feature Service (WFS) and additional GML capabilities.
Support for OGC specifications, in addition to the ongoing implementation by MapInfo of World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) standards such as Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP) and Web Service Definition Language (WSDL), ensures that MapInfo MapXtreme Java Edition v4.7 provides public sector and enterprise users with the ability to more easily and effectively share geo-spatial data across the entire organisation and with customers and citizens.
For example, MapXtreme Java v4.7 now implements W3C Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG). This is a standards based way to exchange data and brings the advantages of Extensible Markup Language (XML) to the world of vector graphics. It enables the textual content of graphics - from logos to diagrams to be searched, indexed, and displayed in multiple languages.
MapXtreme Java Edition v4.7 also includes the ability to render images as SVG.
"The new features in MapXtreme Java Edition v4.7 underscore MapInfo's commitment to providing high-quality, high-performance, interoperable and easy-to-use mapping technology to our customers," said Felicia Semple, Product Manager with MapInfo EMEA. "MapXtreme Java Edition v4.7 enables all departments in an organisation to access and analyse critical spatial information simultaneously and cost effectively. The enhancements in MapXtreme Java Edition v4.7 respond to our customer needs, particularly those customers currently involved in e-government projects as it enables them to share data more effectively, thus facilitating 'joined-up' working practices."
