Orange County Sanitation District Goes Live with Dig-Smart 2.2
Printer Friendly versionPrinter Friendly

For 50 years, the Orange County Sanitation District (OCSD) has dedicated itself to protecting public health in the communities they serve spanning a 470 square mile service area over much of North and Central Orange County. In keeping with their mission, OCSD successfully implemented Dig-Smart 2.2 for ArcGIS (www.dig-smart.com). Using Dig-Smart 2.2, OCSD now communicates electronically with Dig Alert, Southern California's Regional One Call Center (also known as USA-S). Traditionally, OCSD would receive 12,000 pieces of paper containing excavation information over a fax line. That system has been replaced with Dig-Smart 2.2 for ArcGIS which allows OCSD to access Dig Alert excavation tickets through a web server.

After receiving a ticket, OCSD uses its sophisticated RDBMS-based GIS in conjunction with Dig-Smart 2.2 to locate and validate excavation sites for the presence of their sewer infrastructure. Dig-Smart operators then order stake-outs to mark the location of their sewer pipelines to help reduce accidental damage caused by excavation. OCSD also uses the Dig Alert excavation intelligence to coordinate the replacement of their manhole frames and covers to coincide with street repaving projects. This coordination helps to reduce traffic congestion and public costs in maintaining OCSD assets.

If you would like to know more about the implementation of Dig-Smart at OCSD, please contact Jim Schoenberg of Bergmann Associates Geospatial Solutions Division (jschoenberg@bergmannpc.com).
