Educating the Next Generation of Farmers NVision Solutions Provides Free Tutorial
Printer Friendly versionPrinter Friendly

Stennis Space Center, MS - NVision Solutions, Inc. has created a tutorial for precision agriculture that will assist in educating and training America's future farmers. With precision agriculture as the fastest growing sector of agriculture in North America, the need for educating the next generation of farmers in this technology is critical. The tutorial, developed under a cooperative agreement with The University of Mississippi and NASA, is aimed at introducing GIS, remote sensing, and other geospatial technologies to the future workforce of the nation's largest employer, agriculture.

To reach their target audience, NVision Solutions is distributing the tutorial free of charge via the Internet at www.nvisionsolutions.com/FFA and is promoting the tutorial to the members of the Future Farmers of America (FFA) and 4-H. FFA has over 450,000 members and 4-H has almost 7 million youth members. The application is designed to be user-friendly and is appropriate for 6th grade through college.

"The intent of this tutorial is to help novice users, students, and FFA educators gain a better understanding of precision ag and the associated technologies that can ultimately make farmers more efficient," stated Craig Harvey of NVision Solutions.

The computer-based application, which is based on industry standard Environmental Systems Research Institute's Map Objects architecture, includes some basic imagery such as aerial photography and multi-spectral imagery and incorporates a remote sensing and GIS tutorial. The user processes data for a sample site using embedded sample data sets. NVision will soon be providing regional data sets. The experience gained by the user is fostering the increased use of this technology in agriculture.

Precision agriculture is the application of new technologies to crop production. Space age technologies provide high resolution imagery that can identify areas in farm fields needing site specific management. By precisely applying nutrients according to soil and crop requirements, producers can increase yield and are able to meet increasingly stringent environmental requirements.
