Intermap helps Marconi map out sensitive mobile telecom mast sites
Printer Friendly versionPrinter Friendly

Marconi’s wireless business unit is using Intermap's computer-generated 3D maps to streamline the design and construction of a greenfield wireless network. Marconi’s Planet EV© software enables network engineers to design, simulate and test a virtual wireless network prior to field deployment. The NEXTMap Britain data from Intermap provides elevations of sub-metre accuracy mapped every 5 metres across the whole of Britain. Combining the Planet EV software with Intermap’s highly accurate NEXTMap Britain data allows wireless operators to accurately simulate network design and performance. This unique combination allows the operators to recognise a maximum return on their capital investment on wireless network hardware.

"The arrival of Intermap's NEXTMap Britain datasets have proved quite timely as we can now offer our customer a high-resolution terrain dataset that covers the whole of Great Britain. Furthermore Intermap's flexible licensing makes buying and deploying the data much easier for such a fast moving industry, " said Paul Sill, Director of Geodata for Marconi.

Network operators have come under increasing pressure in recent years to improve network performance, but at the same time position their network masts sensitively in areas of population density. With Marconi's software used in conjunction with Intermap's elevation data, network engineers can design and test network configurations and react to localised issues prior to mast and base station installations in the field.

Intermap’s NEXTMap Britain has been one of the world's most ambitious mapping projects. Using advanced airborne radar, the entire British Isles has been mapped electronically in 3D. With a specially equipped Learjet flying at night at an altitude of up to 28,000 ft, the data was captured every 5 metres with an impressive sub-metre vertical accuracy. The result of this effort is a remarkable offering: an extensive, accurate, cost-effective method of modelling terrain across the whole of Great Britain, which can be acquired from a customer-focused commercial entity under flexible licensing terms.
