Atlanta Police Department Selects MapInfo to Create Crime Statistics Web Site for Citizens
Printer Friendly versionPrinter Friendly

Troy, NY-, 2004-MapInfo Corporation (Nasdaq: MAPS) today announced that the Atlanta Police Department has selected MapInfo's strategic mapping technology to create an interactive, Internet-based crime information source for its citizens. This new system uses MapInfoŽ MapXtremeŽ, MapInfo's powerful Windows-based, Internet mapping server, to enable Atlanta-area residents to access visual data about citywide crime statistics and patterns. The citizens can access the Web site at http://www.atlantapd.org/index.asp?nav=crimemaps.

MapXtreme's strategic mapping capabilities provide citizens of Atlanta with an intuitive way to view crimes by type and location. Citizens of Atlanta can quickly and easily view reported crimes from the current month from across the city or by street address. By selecting a specific type of crime from a drop-down menu (e.g. motor vehicle theft, robbery), Web site visitors can see locations where that particular type of crime has occurred, as indicated by a symbol. This helps police determine where crime is more likely to occur and alerts citizens to areas of the city that might be more at risk than others. Atlanta Police Department plans to work with MapInfo to create a more advanced mapping system in the near-future.

"MapInfo is an invaluable tool used by the Atlanta Police Department in our efforts to reduce crime. As part of our weekly Command Operations Briefing to Revitalize Atlanta (COBRA) meetings, MapInfo is used to identify areas with high criminal activity so that we can formulate and implement strategies to reduce crime and improve the quality of life for those who live, work and visit Atlanta," said Chief Richard J. Pennington, Atlanta Police Department. "With the assistance of MapInfo, in 2003, Atlanta's crime was reduced by six percent and violent crimes were reduced by 15 percent. MapInfo has made a positive difference in Atlanta's fight against crime."

"By using MapInfo's location-based technology and the Internet, the Atlanta Police Department has opened up a central line of communication that makes it easy for its community members to access vital information about their neighborhoods," said Sabby Nayar, public sector industry manager, MapInfo. "Every MapInfo-powered map enables the citizens of Atlanta to view accurate data about crime rates in their city. The residents are able to see first-hand the great job their police force is doing and feel proud of their community."
