Ottawa, ON, April 18, 2005 – DM Solutions Group, a leading Open Source and open standards Web mapping solutions company today announced the creation of an interactive carpool mapping tool with the Waterloo Public Interest Research Group (WPIRG) for The Jack Bell Foundation’s Ride-Share program (www.Ride-Share.com). Ride-Share.com is a free portal for commuters to easily find and plan ride sharing possibilities across British Columbia.
Through the Ride-Share Web site, members can interactively browse online maps of locations of other commuters and join a carpool that matches their daily commute. Commuters across B.C. can access and join the free carpool searching service at www.Ride-Share.com.
“The mapping component supplied by DM Solutions has elevated the concept of
online carpooling to a new level”, said Leon Teubes, executive director of Jack Bell RideShare. “Public response to the dynamic street level maps has been almost overwhelming. We intend work with DM Solutions again in the near future to enhance the mapping functionality even further.”
“DM Solutions Group has played a key role in this giant leap forward in the development of our Web application and we are also very excited by our partnership with The Jack Bell Foundation,” says Daryl Novak, WPIRG’s Coordinator of Projects, at the University of Waterloo. “We are looking forward to transitioning our current Web application at www.carpooltool.com that serves the rest of Canada to this 2nd generation version.”
DM Solutions Group built the mapping application based on MapServer and Chameleon, both Open Source technologies. DM Solutions Group’s Chameleon technology allows users to easily create highly customizable Web mapping applications. MapServer, technology of which DM Solutions Group is the world’s largest developer, is a powerful yet flexible development environment for creating Web mapping applications.
“Increased awareness of environmental impacts and the rising price of gasoline are driving demand for carpooling and this trend is only going to continue to grow,” said David McIlhagga, DM Solutions Group president. “Services such as Ride-Share.com that encompass our custom mapping technologies while providing accessibility to anyone will not only benefit drivers, but most importantly, the environment.”
The Waterloo Public Interest Research Group incorporated the mapping functionality created by DM Solutions Group into Ride-Share.com’s Web site and created an easy to use interface to accompany
