URISA Summer Conference Programs Available

June 2, 2005 (Park Ridge, IL) – The Urban and Regional Information Systems Association (URISA) is pleased to announce the availability of two conference programs taking place this summer. Both the Public Participation GIS Conference (PPGIS) and the GIS in Addressing Conference programs are now posted on the URISA website, www.urisa.org. Highlights of each event follow.
Public Participation GIS Conference (July 31 – August 2 at Cleveland State University, Cleveland, Ohio)
Public Participation GIS (PPGIS) refers to a range of topics raised by the intersection of community interests and GIS technology. The use of GIS as a participatory tool raises critical technical, social, and theoretical issues that interest both practitioners and researchers who are concerned with the social consequences of its use. The PPGIS Conference will bring together participants with a rich diversity of experiences that include citizens and citizens groups, public officials, planners, technicians, librarians, policy scientists, and researchers. Presentation topics will range from urban neighborhoods to indigenous people, developing nations, environmental organizations, and virtual communities.
Highlights: Keynote address by Denis Wood, one of America's most insightful experts on the significance and meaning of maps. He authored Seeing Through Maps, The Power of Maps, and Making Maps. He's heard on shows like NPR's This American Life, and he will challenge many assumptions about cartography, PPGIS, and much more. A plenary session, “Engaging the Public in Participation”, will be presented by Joe Goldman, Senior Associate, in AmericaSpeaks’ 21st Century Town Meetings and Citizen Engagement Consulting projects and Hunter Morrison (invited), former City of Cleveland Planning Director and current director of the Center for Urban and Regional Studies at Youngstown State University.
GIS in Addressing Conference: Street Smart and Address Savvy (August 14-17 in Austin, Texas)
Accurate addressing is essential to local government. The GIS in Addressing Conference focuses on all aspects of addressing – integration into existing systems, user-friendly information systems, solutions to problems, and newly emerging challenges. Since 1999, this conference has provided cutting-edge education to professionals from around the world. The conference is endorsed by the National Emergency Number Association (NENA).
Highlights: Two pre-conference workshops will be presented: URISA Certified Workshop - Addresses and IS/GIS Implementation: Key to GIS Success and the NENA Workshop - Introduction to VoIP for PSAP’s. The keynote address, 9-1-1 and GIS: A Successful Marriage will be presented by Dr. Bill Munn, Executive Director of the Tarrant County (Fort Worth, TX) 911 District. Dr. Munn will discuss the growing role of GIS in the delivery of emergency calls, new applications for GIS in public safety communications, and some possibilities for the future.
