ROCHESTER, NY - March 14, 2005 - Pictometry International Corp., provider of a patented information system that captures digital, aerial oblique and orthogonal images as well as related software, announced today that Solano County, CA has contracted with the company to provide a digital imaging database of the county and software. Funding for the project was provided by a homeland security grant and the County Assessor/Recorder's Office.
Solano County has a population of over 400,000 residents and occupies over 900 square miles in central California, halfway between San Francisco and Sacramento. Plans for the Pictometry system include use in the Office of Emergency Services, the Assessor/Recorders Office, and all of the cities within the county.
Pictometry's industry leading software enables users to easily access up to 12 different views of any property, building, highway, or other feature in a county. The software also enables users to create measurements such as distance, height, elevation, and area, directly from the oblique imagery as well as insert GIS content and other data. Other counties in California that use Pictometry include Los Angeles, Orange, San Bernardino, and San Francisco.
Solano County Office of Emergency Services Director Robert Powell says that most of the Solano County emergency responders, such as police and fire, will utilize Pictometry primarily as a planning tool either before or during an incident. "Many of the local fire departments will be taking advantage of the measuring tools in Pictometry to calculate building heights, distances between fire hydrants and will be able to closely estimate hose lays. Law enforcement agencies will be using Pictometry for many tactical operations such as hostage situations, search and rescue functions, as well as evacuation planning for major emergencies," said Powell. "Solano County is a very progressive county and is looking forward to expanding the use and functionality of the Pictometry program."
Solano County Assessor/Recorder Skip Thomson says that the Pictometry system will dramatically enhance the ability of his department to verify assessable property within the county. "Information that could in the past only be verified upon personal inspection can now be done from a desktop. This is one of many tools that enable my department to continue providing fair and accurate assessments," said Thomson.
