On Monday, March 14, major Federal agencies, including NGA, NOAA, USGS, FEMA, BLM, NASA, the Corps of Engineers, NAVFAC and others will provide briefings to MAPPS member firm principals on their budgets, programs and upcoming contracting opportunities. The luncheon address will be provided by Robert Burton, Associate Administrator of the White House’s Office of Federal Procurement Policy, an Office of Management and Budget bureau.
On Tuesday, March 15, MAPPS members and agency officials will participate in agency liaison committees, where small groups discuss issues related to the relationship between key agencies and the private sector. These include NGA, DHS, NOAA, DoD, USGS, and FAA/TSA. The luncheon speaker will be Congressman Robert Andrews (D-NJ), who was a leader in the enactment of legislation last year that established a Geospatial Management Office in the Department of Homeland Security. In the afternoon, MAPPS is hosting a symposium on “Emergency Response: Developing a Strategy for Geospatial Deployment”.
On Tuesday evening, members of the MAPPS PAC Inner Circle will attend a dinner with key Congressional staff featuring guest speaker John Fund, a political columnist for the Wall Street Journal and a frequent commentator of Fox News, MSNBC and other networks. The MAPPS PAC is the political arm of MAPPS, registered with the Federal Elections Committee to support candidates for Federal office.
The highlight on the conference is Wednesday, March 16. The day opens with a Congressional breakfast featuring Congresswoman Heather Wilson (R-NM), the new chairman of the Subcommittee on Technical and Tactical Intelligence of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, which has jurisdiction over agencies including NGA, and Congressman Chris Cannon (R-UT), who will soon introduce legislation creating a cadastral-based Federal land inventory. During the day, MAPPS members will visit their Congressional delegations. More than 100 Congressional offices representing 30 states will be visited for discussions about the geospatial profession and legislation affecting private firms.
MAPPS is a national trade association of more than 150 private sector firms. Based in the Washington, DC suburb of Reston, VA, its members are engaged in GIS; photogrammetry; satellite and airborne remote sensing; value-added conversion and integration services; hydrographic surveying and charting; and other mapping and geospatial activities. Membership is open to all private geospatial firms. Member firms are those in the U.S. engaged in services and data related to geospatial processing and production, while associate members include hardware, software and product firms that support those engaged in geospatial processing and production, as well as non-U.S. entities.
