TROY, NY -- March 15, 2005 -- It’s been said that on St. Patrick’s Day, everyone is Irish and according to data released today from MapInfo Corporation (NASDAQ: MAPS) some metros will be having bigger parades than others. Cities such as Boston and New York are traditionally seen as areas with the highest Irish population; however, after more than 150 years of assimilation, the Irish have made their mark in nearly every corner of the 50 states. Through its geo-demographic research solutions, including its PSYTE® U.S. Advantage neighborhood segmentation solution, MapInfo found that metros in Montana, California and Pennsylvania hold some of the highest percentages of Irish Americans.
Ethnicity is just one of the insights that MapInfo is able to offer companies that want to better understand the lifestyles and preferences of their customerssuch as the cars they drive, magazines they read and television programs they watch. Based on MapInfo geo-demographic research, here are some Irish Americans enclaves:
Butte, Montana, Ireland’s 5th Province While there are only four historic provinces in Ireland, the people of Montana consider the city of Butte to be the fifth. Today, 150 years after the Irish first started moving to Montana to work in the state’s rich copper mines, Butte ranks third among all of U.S. metropolitan areas in terms of the percentage of population who list their ancestry as Irish. Butte’s Irish population makes up 27 percent.
Nation’s Top Green Metros Top among the nation’s cities for Irish ancestry is Ocean City, NJ, at 28 percent. Following close behind are: Barnstable, Massachusetts (aka “The Irish Riviera”); Butte, Montana; Boston, Massachusetts; and Albany, New York. New York City, with a population of 2.1 million people of Irish descent, is number one in terms of a total count, followed by Philadelphia, Chicago, Boston and Los Angeles.
Irish Need Not Apply…for a Parade License For the least Irish towns, you have to head southwest toward the Mexican border. McAllen, TX, is the city with the lowest percentage of Irish population nationwide.
“As an ethnic group, the Irish may be more typical of the U.S. population than any other,” said Jon Winslow, director of product management at MapInfo. “Of the approximately 40 million people listing Irish as a part of their ancestry in the 2000 Census, only ten percent of the nation’s population lives in ‘Irish’ cities, like Boston or New York. The other 90 percent are spread out all across the nation. Companies looking to target this broadly-based ethnicity, or any ethnic or demographic trait, can do so with greater accuracy and detail through MapInfo geo-demographic software and data.”
