Local eGovernment Minister Highlights Growing Use of Geographic Information
Printer Friendly versionPrinter Friendly

The growing importance of geographic information for government, business and leisure services is the focus of a keynote speech by the local eGovernment Minister at a major industry event on 8 November 2005.

Jim Fitzpatrick MP will officially open the Association for Geographic Information's annual conference and exhibition by highlighting the power of geography to bring performance benefits across the public and private sectors.

The speech complements a conference programme influenced by growing recognition of how accurate geographic data can help with the response to natural disasters, both in Britain and abroad. Representatives from the United Nations and the charity MapAction will discuss how geographic information helped with emergency relief efforts and longer-term reconstruction following the Asian tsunami. There will also be a focus on how flood risk management in the UK can be supported by scenario modelling using geographic information.

Other conference topics this year include community safety, coastal management, healthcare provision and transport partnerships.

Mr Fitzpatrick, whose portfolio includes Ministerial responsibility for Ordnance Survey, continues a Ministerial tradition of opening speeches at the three-day annual AGI event. In recent years, both Yvette Cooper and Phil Hope have made announcements on geographic information issues, including the launch of the Government's Geographic Information panel.

This year's overall theme is 'Places, people and partnerships' reflecting the role of geographic information in providing a common language to enable joined-up communication and information sharing.

The AGI conference and exhibition is the biggest annual event for geographic information issues in the UK. It attracts chief executives and directors from industry and senior representatives from the public sector responsible for both policy formulation and delivery. More than 50 exhibitors, including multi-national companies, government agencies and small business start-ups, will demonstrate products and services.

This year's event takes place at Chelsea Village, London, on 8 -10 November. For more information, visit www.agi2005.org.uk.
