ROCHESTER, NY - April 3, 2006 - Pictometry International Corp., the worldwide leader in digital, aerial oblique imagery and measuring software, announced today that the City of Newark, NJ will be adding its technology as part of city's enterprise wide geographic information system (GIS), called NEWGIN (Newark's Geographic Information Network).
Newark's GIS platform includes ESRI's ArcSDE and ArcIMS applications as well as Orion Technology's OnPoint(tm) software. "This three-tier, database-driven system of ESRI, Orion, and Pictometry, will provide us the ability to manage spatial information under one scalable, multi-functional, and interoperable environment," said Christopher Darby, Information Technology Manager for the City of Newark.
Pictometry(r) technology will also be incorporated into the city's Emergency Preparedness Information Network (EPINet), a State of New Jersey initiated program that enables the sharing and deployment of GIS data to multiple agencies at local and state levels for homeland
security applications.
NEWGIN enables the city to take critical data used in the day to day decision making process of government and display it against a geo-coded map of the city. "This allows us to use our data for just about all areas of service such as 9-1-1 dispatch response, influenza, immunization, West-Nile tracking, tax assessment, inspections, water table maintenance, parade routing (traffic), and garbage pick-up, to name a few," said Darby. "By adding Pictometry to an already developing GIS network, the City of Newark, in accordance with Essex County, is doing everything in its power to give emergency personnel the tools they need. The city looks forward to adding Pictometry to our enterprise system and to allow other municipalities within Essex County the ability to have access to these images."
Pictometry's industry leading software enables users to quickly and easily access up to 12 different oblique (3D-like) high-resolution views of any property, building, highway, landmark, or other feature in a county. The software also enables users to obtain measurements directly from the georeferenced imagery as well as insert and overlay GIS and other data.
"Enterprise GIS enables the City of Newark to look at the geographic aspects of a body of data by way of querying a database and receiving the results on a map. This becomes a tremendous benefit for our government enterprise as well as a critical component to the overall efforts for Homeland Security. Using GIS, officials can pinpoint hazards and begin to evaluate the consequences of potential attacks, evacuations, emergencies and/or disasters," said Danny J. Hill, Newark CIO and OMB Director. "By adding Pictometry into our program, we further expand our effectiveness by adding new capabilities from their oblique photos, location data, and software."
"Local government agencies are responsible for initial planning and response to emergency incidents, disasters, and terrorist events," said Robert Swales, director of Newark's Office of Emergency Management. "Our GIS is a vital tool that we use in all our hazardous event approaches, strategic planning, and emergency responses."
