Preferred Means of Travel for Vacation Trips in Europe

Travelling in your own car was the preferred means for vacation trips in almost all EU countries in 2004. Only the Irish and British prefer to travel by plane. The highest rate of journeys by car was found in Slovenia (82% of all vacation trips with more than 4 nights of accommodations). Also in France (73%), Spain (71%) and the Netherlands (67%), the rate was very high. Vacation trips by plane were most popular in Ireland (66%), the UK (51%), Denmark (39%), Luxemburg (38%) and Sweden (35%).

Other means of transportation were very significant in some countries, while scoring rather low in the EU average: Travelling to holiday destinations by train is rela,tively common in Lithuania and Poland (19%, respectively), Latvia (17%), Hungary (15%) and France (12%). Travel by coach (bus) was popular in Estonia (36%), Slovakia (26%), Latvia and the Czech Republic (20%, respectively) as well as in Poland (19%). Travel by boat is a very important means of transport in Greece (21%), as many of the Greek Islands can only be reached by boat. (Source: EUROSTAT)
