Portland, Oregon – Meeting diverse user needs can be a challenge when developing a web based Enterprise GIS solution. Advanced users often want a robust interactive map while casual users and public users prefer a simple and quick approach for accessing information. For this reason GeoNorth developed the MapOptix Multi-Map framework which leverages the administrative capabilities of MapOptix while delivering an intuitive cross-browser report centric presentation. Over the past 2 years GeoNorth has implemented a number of MapOptix Multi-Map solutions for various cities in Oregon allowing them to deliver rich content using a very familiar “web search” approach. Users are presented with a query form which results in a candidate’s list of locations. Selecting a candidate record generates a summary report page that includes a map with multiple tab links for other thematic maps, images, and tabular content specific to the queried location.
In addition to being easy to use, the MapOptix Multi-Map framework provides significant benefits which includes easy configuration, cross-browser compatibility, and it minimizes the loads on map servers. Many sites have also been able to conveniently leverage their existing website content and content from other jurisdictions. This capability facilitates a portal concept providing a “one-stop” solution for information.
The City of Tigard, Oregon has recently implemented the MapOptix Multi-Map solution and is currently using this to present Crime Incident data. This was a highly successful solution which demonstrated a concentration of crime occurring in business districts. The Multi-Map solution helped raised awareness and was instrumental in the commissioning of a new task force funded through increased business license fees. Using the solution, the public and business owners can now easily monitor crime activity and take measures to help reduce crime in their area. The City plans on using the solution to strategically bring awareness to specific neighborhoods or as a tool for assisting with the establishment of Neighborhood Watch programs.
Other recent adopters of the MapOptix Multi-Map solution, such as the City of Hillsboro, the City Lebanon, and the City of Wilsonville, use their implementations to focus on property, utilities, park proximity, schools, building permits, and to tap into County assessment information. Some have a creative presentation of information such as providing users with the Wi-Fi access points or list of parks that are closest to the queried address. Many show multiple years of ortho imagery so that change can be easily identified. Some present scanned tax maps hosted by the State of Oregon. With a single click, the City of Corvallis presents a utilities map series to show water, sanitary, and storm utilities. Quick and easy access to fire hydrant locations in proximity to a queried address provides a benefit to the citizen, Public Works staff, and the Fire Department. With little effort, existing information and web accessible content can often be integrated to present the ultimate information “mash-up”.
