Printer Friendly versionPrinter Friendly

RESTON, VA, 8 June 2007 – MAPPS, the national association of private geospatial, mapping and photogrammetry firms, today announced the agenda for its annual Summer Meeting which will be held July 16-20, 2007, at the Mount Washington Resort at Bretton Woods, New Hampshire.

“This year’s Summer Meeting features an agenda that addresses emerging geospatial technology trends and delves into pressing policy issues that will affect the entire geospatial community,” said John Palatiello, MAPPS Executive Director. “In addition, we will be celebrating the MAPPS 25th Anniversary with special networking events.”

One of the most widely anticipated sessions will be “IFN, LFN and … For the Nation: Chicken or the Egg?” on Friday morning, July 20. This forum will examine the strategies and priorities of federally sponsored programs such as Imagery for the Nation, Elevation for the Nation and others that have been proposed. Participants Stu Davis, State of Ohio, and Dr. Jay Parrish, Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, will discuss whether these endeavors are complimentary or competitive, whether they should be launched simultaneously or separately, and if the latter, which should go first, funding strategies for a number of national geospatial data programs, and the impact these proposed programs may have on the geospatial community.

New this year will be daily “Technology Tip-Offs” featuring presentations by leading manufacturers and providers of cutting-edge technologies. Each day’s Tip-Off will focus on a different segment of geospatial technology. Another first-time event will be the presentation of the 2007 Geospatial Products and Services Excellence Awards, which recognize the professionalism, value, integrity and achievement of MAPPS member and associate member firms in specific projects.

MAPPS meetings are open to both members and non-members. Registration information, along with the complete agenda, including family and networking events, may be found at www.mapps.org.

Highlights of the MAPPS Summer Meeting include the following:

Tuesday, July 17
Digital Photogrammetry Sensor Technology Trends Tip-Off – A panel of experts representing major OEM’s of digital aerial sensors will discuss recent trends and new developments in the technology.

International Opportunities for Geospatial Products and Services - What does the global market for geospatial products and services look like? What are the hot regions of the world? A panel of regional experts from Leica Geosystems will provide insights on where mapping and geospatial activities are being contracted out or privatized, where there is government private sector competition, and where there may be emerging projects and opportunities … or threats. Representatives from Latin America, Europe, the Middle East, India, Africa and Asia will participate.

Wednesday, July 18
Airborne Sensor LIDAR/SAR Technology Trends Tip-Off – A panel of experts representing major OEM’s of LiDAR and radar aerial sensors will discuss recent trends and new developments in the technology.

Speed Dating to Strategic Partnerships – Remember the television show, The Dating Game? This entertaining take-off on the show will provide insights on how firms hook-up … how large firms select small business subcontractors … and other business-to-business relationships are created in the geospatial field.

Thursday, July 19
Satellite Imagery Technology Trends Tip-Off – A panel of experts representing the leading U.S. commercial satellite remote sensing image data providers will discuss recent trends and new developments in the satellite sensors and new launches.

Accuracy Assessment Educational Session - Russ Congalton, Professor of Remote Sensing and GIS at the University of New Hampshire, will provide education on the state of the art techniques, applications and standards for spatial and thematic accuracy assessment, with an emphasis on employment of the new technologies presented in each day’s Technology “Tip-Off”.

Friday, July 20
Airborne Positional and Control (GPS/IMU/Survey) Trends Tip-Off – A panel of experts representing major OEM’s of GPS, IMU and other survey interfaces will discuss recent trends and new developments.

IFN, LFN and … For the Nation: Chicken or the Egg? – Several new initiatives such as Imagery for the Nation, LiDAR for the Nation, Parcels for the Nation and Transportation for the Nation have been launched, discussed, developed or suggested. Are these initiatives complementary or competitive? Should they be bundled or promoted separately? Which should go first? Perspectives will be presented by Stu Davis, President of the National States Geographic Information Council (NSGIC) and Administrator of Enterprise Shared Services Ohio Office of Information Technology and Jay Parrish, a member of the Association of American State Geologists and State Geologist of Pennsylvania.

Other activities include business, networking and team-building events such as a Lobster Bake, an Awards Dinner, a Roaring 20’s Party, and the Annual MAPPS Business Meeting, including election of members of the MAPPS Board of Directors.

About MAPPS
MAPPS was formed in 1982 by a small group of U.S. photogrammetry companies as the Management Association for Private Photogrammetric Surveyors to represent the interests of private photogrammetric and aerial surveying firms. Since then, MAPPS has expanded in size and scope to become the only national association exclusively comprised of private firms in the spatial data and geographic information system field in the United States.

Current MAPPS memberships of more than 160 firms spans the entire spectrum of the geospatial community, including Member Firms engaged in surveying, photogrammetry, satellite and airborne remote sensing, aerial photography, hydrography, aerial and satellite image processing, GPS, and GIS data collection and conversion services. MAPPS also includes Associate Members, which are companies that provide hardware, software, products and services to the geospatial profession in the United States and other firms from around the world.
