Data Collection Launches Highways Condition GIS Link
Printer Friendly versionPrinter Friendly

Porstmouth, UK, 01 March 2007 - Data Collection Limited has developed a system for integrating UK highways condition survey data with mapping and geographic information systems (GIS). Called MARCHmap, the system allows government-specified highways condition classifications to be provided in a universal GIS format allowing display on any mapping system or GIS.

MARCHmap is a development of the MARCH Pavement Management System (MARCHpms). The system is processes and manages data for the United Kingdom Pavement Management System (ukPMS) which is mandated by the UK government requiring highway authorities to survey and report on the condition of highways. With the MARCHmap, survey data such as colour-coded banded condition data and residual life classifications can be viewed on maps down to the nearest metre.

Most local councils are using GIS to provide a centralised resource for council information. However, different types of highway data are often held in isolation and data on adjoining footways and associated assets is often limited. Integration between MARCHpms and other systems such as GIS allows authorities to view all highways maintenance information in one place. This will allow maintenance priorities to be set with a much better picture of highway condition.

“A big challenge for highways authorities is setting the right priorities for maintenance bearing in mind budget limitations. There is a lot of conflicting information that is often viewed in isolation and decisions are often made without all the evidence to hand. MARCHmap allows crucial UKPMS data to be displayed on a council’s GIS which can in turn access other highways information to build up a complete picture for each stretch of carriageway and footway” says Steve Batchelor, Director of Data Collection Limited.

Data Collection specialises in the collection of highway condition and inventory data essential for the maintenance planning of the highway network. The company is a major player in the provision of SCANNER automated road surface surveys that are a requirement for calculating the Government's Best Value Performance Indicator (BVPI) for road maintenance. MARCHpms is one of only five accredited UKPMS systems for producing the BVPI’s.
