Camp Pendleton, CA – The Camp Pendleton Natural Resources Map has been selected for publication in the 2008 Environmental Systems Research Institute Map Book.
According to ESRI, “Published annually since 1984, the ESRI Map Book is the only publication dedicated to acknowledging the important and innovative accomplishments of GIS users around the world.”
Geospatial Information Systems (GIS) utilizes technology to view and analyze spatial data. GEOFidelis West is responsible for mapping Marine Corps installations on the west coast.
“This is a big honor for the Marine Corps,” said Bill Russell, Director of GEOFidelis West, “because it highlights the GIS program, our cartographic abilities and puts us center stage within the GIS industry.”
The strategic component of GEOFidelis is the Central Repository that has been developed to provide a centralized source of geospatial data representing all Marine Corps installations. The GEOFidelis Central Repository maintains the Common Installation Picture (CIP) for the U.S. Marine Corps.
The Camp Pendleton Natural Resources Map, published twice annually by the Assistant Chief of Staff, Environmental Security, graphically depicts the natural resources on the base. This map is one of the many tools used by the base to help best manage its environment while providing the best training available to the Marine Corps units at Camp Pendleton.
The current version of the Natural Resources Map was designed by David Toney, GIS Manager of GEOFidelis West. This will be Toney’s second map to be published in the ESRI Map Book. In 2007, Toney’s map ‘San Diego County Fire History’ was published.
“It’s an honor to be recognized and published two years in a row,” said Toney. “This really helps showcase the work the Marine Corps does with GIS and the environment. Our programs are top-notch, and this presentation shows that on many different fronts.”
