ArcIMS 4.0 @ the ESRI International UC

SpatialNews > Events
Did you have news, reports, images, or information from the ESRI User Conference to share with the GIS Community? Do you have details of an ArcIMS implementation you'd like to share? Did you exhibit at this year's show? Tell us about it... send details to editor@geocomm.com!

Although ArcIMS 4 was released a couple of months ago (May 1 to be exact) it’s still relatively new to most ArcIMS users.

Interesting to note that many users who already received their upgrades still have them sitting in the box… this may be a function of the daunting task that awaits users when they configure their system (I’m just going on what I’ve heard!). In a session dedicated to ArcIMS 4.0, the ArcIMS product manager warns users that they may wish to keep their 4.0 releases on the shelf as 4.0.1 is expected to come in the near future. Since installation of an upgrade also requires a full un-install of your existing IMS it may be wise to hold off a bit longer... unless you’re a sucker for punishment.

Significant features and capabilities in 4.0
  • Metadata services (ArcIMS Metadata Server) providing the ability to create a repository for publishing and browsing metadata over the web (see Kentucky example below)
  • Ehanced capabilities for Java developers via a Java Connector (JSP tag libraries and samples are included)
  • Support for 2 new optional extensions (ArcMap server and the ArcIMS Route server). What does this mean? Well now users can leverage all the cartographic capabilities of ArcMap as well as routing and directions into websites developed with IMS.
  • Supported by Linux and HP UX operating systems
  • Ability to integrate data of varying types from multiple sources
  • Clients and servers communicate via ArcXML
  • Supported clients include wireless devices, lightweight browsers, and desktop clients.
  • ArcMap server support for PMF files
  • ArcIMS Site Starters 1.1 can now be downloaded from ESRI's Web site at www.esri.com/arconline.

An excellent example of the metadata explorer is this site from Kentucky!

ArcIMS Site Starter Applications for Buffer, Search, and Viewer Apps – version 4.0 released in May

According to ESRI Product Manager Rich Turner's address to UC attendees, the goals of the latest releases of ArcGIS & IMS are to integrate the two products more closely, and to focus on quality and performance issues. New desktop products (ArcReader), data products (such as Streetmap Europe), and new methods for data sharing are now available and will come in the future.

See www.esri.com/arcims for more info.
