GIS Day at The USGS Mid-Continent Mapping Center

Greetings from the middle of Missouri and home of the USGS Mid-Continent Mapping Center. We at the MCMC were busy for the day and week, both locally and regionally.

At a regional level, a senior level group from MCMC attended GIS events at Southwest Missouri State University co-sponsored by the ASPRS - Central Region and the Ozarks GIS User Group.

At the local level, we supported the Middle School's GEONITE with two events. One was a hands-on digital mapping presentation by Chuck Pederson of the USGS. His presentation allowed students to experience GIS data using the DLGv32 viewing software. All students and parents attending received a copy of the viewer and sample data on CD to take home. Another event was our popular "Geography Geopardy" patterned after the TV game. Students and parents were quizzed on their geographic knowledge in such areas as energy, water resources, earthquakes, volcanoes and the like. Local media featured the events.

Students received hands on experience in a computer lab setting, being exposed to USGS digital mapping data and familiarity with the USGS viewing software DLGv32. The students loaded the SDTS format Digital Elevation Model (DEM) followed by loading the Digital Raster Graphic (DRG) and produced a Shaded Relief Image. The FLOOD option was then utilized to simulate water rising to a predetermined level, so the students could see how water levels follow the shape of the contours on the DRG. The Digital Ortho Quarter Quad (DOQQ) was then layered onto the shaded relief and the students were able to find their homes and the shape of the surrounding terrain. They really got excited when they learned where they could get for free, most of what they just looked at, over the Internet.

Finally, although not a specific GIS Day event, a map presentation to Sen. Jean Carnahan demonstrated the power and desirability of GIS data maps. Central Region Geographer Max Ethridge presented the senator with a large sized, custom-made Missouri map during the Veteran's Day Mel Carnahan Memorial Armory Dedication on Nov. 11 in Rolla, Mo. Sen. Carnahan had requested the map to "show case" the state and the USGS resources in her district.
