From The Floor: A Daily Report

The following column was originally published in the GITA XXIV "Conference News Daily".
Where else other than the annual GITA conference can you find all of the leading GIS/LBS vendors and solution providers educating and empowering the geo-spatial community under one roof?

The GITA conference is always one of my personal favorites because it affords me the opportunity to meet and mingle with the geo-spatial community and learn about people and solutions, regardless of software affiliation.

In my role as Manager of a geo-spatial industry news portal, I’m fortunate enough to be able to communicate on a daily basis with a global audience of industry professionals, regardless of vendor affiliation. The GITA conference provides me with a chance to meet and learn from the same community face-to-face. Professionals from local government, utilities and telecommunication providers, CAD, GPS and GIS solution providers, and individuals from the emerging wireless location-based solutions (LBS) sector are all available to answer questions over the next 3 days.

GITA’s commitment to educating members of the geo-spatial community is evident in this year’s conference program. There are 22 full and half-day seminars currently under way giving attendees a chance to explore specific topics in greater detail. I took advantage of this myself by hitting the show bright and early Sunday morning, taking in a seminar on field data acquisition. This half-day seminar gave some 80+ attendees a chance to learn in detail about GPS. On hand were representatives from 20 leading GPS companies and consultants, eagerly answering questions and letting people test-drive their products. Keep in mind, if you’re not attending a detailed topic specific seminar, there are 80+ planned educational sessions, and more than 130 exhibiting companies awaiting you.

GITA XXIV boasts a greater number of International representation as well as added interest from local government representatives. I’m looking forward to seeing and learning about a number of solutions geared towards these users. I’ve already heard from a number of the exhibitors and have a heads-up as to what we can expect from them. Be prepared to see for yourself some new GIS product releases, web-enabling technologies, field surveying solutions, data capture technologies, and LBS solutions

New to this year’s Conference is a Local Government Perspective track dedicated to the unique concerns faced by governments when it comes to implementing geospatial technologies. Spanish attendees will welcome a new Spanish Solutions track, presented by geospatial professionals from Spanish-speaking countries. Finally, those of you interested in Mobile and LBS solutions will definitely want to take in the “Taking IT to the street” track presentations. Perhaps the most visible additional to the exhibition hall is the Mobile pavilion where 16 companies will be showing off their Mobile, LBS, and field-enabling solutions. If you’re looking for me, chances are you’ll be able to track me down here!
