From The Floor, A Daily Report- We Meet Some Attendees
The following column was originally published in the GITA XXIV "Conference News Daily".
By Wednesday afternoon, visitors to San Diego will have been exposed to more than 22
full and half-day seminars, 100 educational sessions, and 160 geospatial software,
hardware, and solution providers. A number of conference attendees have shared some
thoughts about why they came to San Diego and what they hope to take home.
- Bill Foor, Product Manager, Sprint has been involved with GITA since the mid
80’s. According to Foor, GITA XXIV gives him a chance to see for himself the
progression of technology over the years.
- Luiz Eduardo and 5 companions have traveled to San Diego from Brazil. The
group works for an electric company and is getting ideas they can apply to their
GIS operations, which involve using Oracle and Microstation products.
- Matthew Dalebroux is a GIS specialist with Wisconsin Public Service involved
with mapping gas and electrical distribution lines. The company has worked with
IBM’s GFIS since 1984 and is now migrating to SmallWorld and using Linesoft
Work Management.
- Jorge Pereira of Abakos Digital Images in Australia is attending GITA for the
first time. Abakos is involved in data integration, capture, and migration. The
company is setting up an office in the US and hopes to establish some business
relationships as a result of the show.
- Eric Vandewater, Niagary Mohawk Power, Syracuse, NY. Is attending his first
GITA. Having the SmallWorld user’s exchange here right after the conference
was a great reason for Eric and 3 of his co-workers to come this year. His focus is
on system architecture, however, he is very interested in leaving with information
about field data acquisition techniques.
Eric is not alone with his interest in mobile computing and mobile geospatial solutions.
Attendance at the Mobile Solutions conference tracks, educational sessions, and vendor
booths offering mobile geospatial solutions have been brisk and appear to be a welcomed
addition to GITA XXIV.
Conference attendees have shown a strong interest in Mobile computing technologies.
GITA XXIV has addressed this by offering a Mobile Solutions conference track as well
as the Mobile Pavilion in the exhibition hall. These additions have been popular with
attendees of the show. Mobile solutions have also been showcased in a number of
educational sessions and panels, in the mobile pavilion, and throughout the exhibition
hall.
WalkAbout Computers (Booth #108) is showing the new HAMMERHEAD 3
ruggedized mobile computer. Powered by a 400 MHz Pentium chip, the HH# combines
simplicity of use, speed, wireless connectivity, and durability into a lightweight, water-
tight package.
IMedeon (Booth #1400) is showcasing the company’s iM:Work line of workforce
management solutions for large remote and mobile workforces. A short role play based
on the TV sit-com “Home Improvement” details the company’s scalable, web-based
solution.
