SpatialNews Press Release
From the Floor at GITA 25
by Glenn Letham, GeoCommunity Managing Editor
The following article appeared in the GITA 25 "Conference News" publication on Tuesday March 19
Once again I myself at one of my favorite stops of the year. no, not Tampa, but the GITA Conference! Hopefully many of you took advantage of this spectacular location and arrived a couple of days early, providing you with a chance to take part in the preconference seminars. For those of you who have never attended one of the half- or full-day educational seminars, I urge you to keep them in mind for next year. Since I spend much of my normal daily routine occupied with locating and reporting on GIS and geospatial educational resources, I can tell you that you will be hard-pressed to find a better educational resource under one roof than the GITA conference.
What's caught my eye?
Coming here directly from CTIA's Wireless 2002 in Orlando on Sunday and Monday, I couldn't help but think of the similarities. Interoperability, homeland security, data security, open systems, and standards are all common themes that exhibitors and attendees at both Wireless 2002 and GITA 25 are discussing. Additionally, geospatial professionals and wireless application developers seem to agree that location-based services (LBS) and even more specifically, a person's location, may in fact be "the killer app". Stay tuned for more or visit the Mobile Pavilion and see for yourself.
What's cool?
As usual, my first stop Monday afternoon was a pre-opening tour through the exhibition hall. Getting my vote for "cool" are:
- SchlumbergerSema (Booth #700) and their "Xtremely Essential News" studio. Visitors hear from representatives fresh from the Olympic Games in Salt Lake City, Utah, in an entertaining game show format designed to test contestants' knowledge of the Olympics and systems integration. one lucky winner will walk away with a prize of 250,000 air miles!
- Heard of Any*GIS? Now you can see open, interoperable GIS in action when you visit Hitachi Software Global Technology (Booth #701).
- Familiar with the SRTM Global Mapping Mission? I hope so, since it was likely the most aggressive effort to map the World in 3D. Visit the NIMA (Booth #1624) and see for yourself.
- Are you a soccer fan? If so, you'll get a "kick" out of visiting the Korea geoSpatial Information & Communication Co., Ltd. (Booth #1438). The crew from South Korea is providing a virtual 3D view of the facilities playing host to the 2002 FIFA World Cup.
- Any golfers out there? Kinetic Solutions, LLC (Booth #812) rounds out my "cool" tour of the exhibition hall. Actually, you'll find them outside the main exhibition hall entrance with their golf simulator.
I could go on but I'd rather you see for yourself. Please, when you return home, drop me a line and tell me what you think was "cool" at GITA 25. I'd love to hear from you at editor@geocomm.com.
