INDIANAPOLIS, Mar 22, 2002 -- David Melton, Consultant with Plexis Group, LLC spent the past week in sunny Tampa, Florida unfortunately
his trip was for business and not for pleasure.
Melton was invited to Tampa to share his knowledge of GIS-mapping at the Geospatial Information and Technology Association's (GITA) 25th Anniversary Conference
which wrapped up today. Melton made his presentation, entitled "Making It Happen: From Idea to Implementation and Beyond", as part of the conference's educational
session.
Melton's presentation chronicled the development of an Internet-based, GIS-enabled road maintenance management application, as Plexis Group's design methodology
shifted from the deductive analysis of a single client's functional needs to a more inductive approach that considers the potential needs of a broader user community.
Through Melton's presentation, his audience of more than 3,500 GIS professionals gained an understanding of the potential benefits and risks of this inductive approach.
As part of the presentation, Melton also shared the challenges Indianapolis-based Plexis Group faced and lessons they learned during the application development
process.
Melton's presentation highlighted the following key points: How functional needs drive the application development process. How a client-specific application can be
generalized for a wider audience.
The importance of listening to user input throughout the entire development process.
This year's conference theme, "Bringing IT Together: Charting the Course," was designed to address the myriad of opportunities that geospatial information technology
presents to infrastructure-related organizations. Hot topics discussed included enterprise integration, interoperability, field and mobile technologies, work management
solutions, e-business, local government issues, network operations management, web applications and much more.
The conference's keynote speaker was former U.S. Air Force Captain Scott O'Grady who made national news headlines back in 1995 when his F-16 was shot down
over Bosnia. O'Grady survived that attack and 6 days without food or water, before being rescued.
