UK Royal Air Force - No 1 Aeronautical Information Documents Unit (No 1 AIDU)
No 1 Aeronautical Information Documents Unit (No 1 AIDU) of the Royal Air Force has chosen Laser-Scan technology to deliver its new air chart production system.
No 1 AIDU publishes charts and data by which all UK military aircraft navigate. The publications are primarily for the Armed Forces but most are also available for civilian operators.
The latest Laser-Scan technology will enable No 1 AIDU to run an advanced multi-product, multi-scale, multi-format system. The new facility will improve the supply of data for in flight systems and will be used on aircraft such as Eurofighter, Jaguar and Tornado.
Laser-Scan Managing Director Dr Michael Sanderson says:
“We are extremely proud to have won this prestigious contract. Laser-Scan’s powerful technology will enable No 1 AIDU to run an advanced air chart production system, delivering many valuable products from a single database. We’re looking forward to continuing our longstanding relationship with No 1 AIDU - the development of a world-leading air chart system will allow us to build on the achievements of the past 15 years.”
The production of many different charts over one area is vital for No 1 AIDU; following the installation of Laser-Scan’s high performance technology a single database will be used to derive as many charts as is necessary to meet operational requirements. No 1 AIDU will have a single seamless aeronautical database to serve all its products, no longer will each product have to be maintained individually, a single change to the database will update all products.
The system will also be used to access Notices to Airmen (NOTAMs); in addition to receiving NOTAMs for the whole world, aircrew will now be able to request the NOTAMs, using web technology, for any specified area or route. This will allow the identification of important changes quickly and easily, thus improving safety and saving both time and money.
No 1 AIDU's Commanding Officer, Wing Commander Gary Barber says:
'We are delighted to be able to continue the long standing relationship between No 1 AIDU and Laser-Scan, and look forward to reaping the benefits from what will be the world’s most advanced aeronautical information production system. No 1 AIDU has recognised that object-orientation is key to the Units future plans, and is delighted with the solution offered by Laser-Scan'
The core air chart production system conforms to industry standards and will be established at No 1 AIDU over the next three years.
