Benefits of Topology and GML
Speaker: Ian Painter
Company: Snowflake Software
The Geography Markup Language (GML) developed through the OpenGIS consortium (OGC) is rapidly emerging as a global de facto standard for the transfer of geographic data. However, GML is far more than just another transfer format. GML being a subset of XML inherits the key feature of being self-describing. As a result, software applications receiving GML either as a bulk transfer format or via an on-line web service, can understand the data they receive without knowing the details of data beforehand. This self-describing concept of XML is key to opening mainstream enterprise IT to geographic data. My talk will cover these concepts using the example of topology in GML and the benefits of putting these concepts together.

Ian Painter is Director and co founder of Snowflake Software - a Laser-Scan partner. Snowflake produces GO Loader, a key product for loading, modelling and maintaining GML using an Oracle database. GO Loader also integrates with Laser-Scan's Radius Topology to enable topological GML to be edited within Oracle. Before starting Snowflake Ian worked as a Senior Technical Consultant at the Ordnance Survey developing the reengineering programme that resulted in the creation of OS MasterMap.
