Internet users can now construct maps, search for specific data, and download results through a
new application being served by the U.S. Geological Survey. GEODE - short for Geologic Data Explorer - is designed to provide geologic and related information to a wide range of Internet users. For the general audience, a map of the United States provides "point-and-click" access to U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) fact sheets and other information on topics as diverse as volcanoes and oil resources. For the more advanced audience, the same map interface provides access to a mapping application serving more detailed data in specific parts of the U.S. GEODE currently serves information mostly related to energy resources because the application originated in that part of the USGS that assesses oil, natural gas, and coal resources of the U.S. and the World. Information and maps covering other geologic topics such as volcanoes, earthquakes, coastal erosion, and climate change are being added to GEODE. Once fully implemented, GEODE will provide a single Internet source of information for USGS geologic information. GEODE can be accessed through the Internet at: dss1.er.usgs.gov As the nation's largest water, earth and biological science and civilian mapping agency the USGS works in cooperation with more than 2000 organizations across the country to provide reliable, impartial, scientific information to resource managers, planners, and other customers. This information is gathered in every state by USGS scientists to minimize the loss of life and property from natural disasters, contribute to sound economic and physical development of the nation's natural resources, and enhance the quality of life by monitoring water, biological, energy, and mineral resources. http://dss1.er.usgs.gov/ |
